HotFlash 3.43
for the week of 4 October 1996

Hello and welcome to HotFlash, the weekly newsletter of events and
information for HotWired and WIRED magazine.

Log On, Dial In, Drop Out

Is the cyberdelia of "Mondo 2000" and friends a cultural revolution for
the information age, or just a cyborgasmic quickie? R. U. Sirius and
Mark Dery debate freedom, escapism, and the end of work as we know it,
in this week's Brain Tennis.

"Being digital is fine; some of my best friends are digital," says
Michael Schrage. But being analog is still good business - big bucks
await the webpreneurs who meld meatspace and cyberspace into one
marketplace. Check out Schrage, Andrew Leonard on culture, Simson
Garfinkel on tech, and John McChesney's HotSeat, in Packet.

We go from marketplace to interface to tell you how a server finds out
what browser you're running, and why it wants to know. Plus: Adding
context to hypertext, Image Editing 101, and that oxymoronic ActiveX
plug-in. In Webmonkey, a service station for the wired world.

Dr. Weil keeps mum this week about G-men, G-strings, the GNP, and Kenny
G - but he does touch on that darn G-spot. Fact or fiction? Tact or
friction? Dr. Weil has answers on hives, milk, fab abs, optical
floaters, and the Holy Grail of orgasm - and for an instantaneous
response, dip into the Doc Weil Database.

The Red Queen and the engineers at OnLive! have something in common: the
cry "Off with their heads!" If you'd enjoy peopling a virtual landscape
with chatty floating avatars, pass on the looking-glass and head for
Dream Jobs this Tuesday. Plus: Open jobs at Neoglyphics, Mpath, and
more.

We love Canada - but we're impressed by any country with a national
cocktail people actually like to drink. Cocktail presents the Caesar, a
Bloody Mary look-alike whose taste leaves no room for confusion.

Their fretting shareholders can rest easy now: Yahoo! has discovered
that "Click Here!" on banners boosts response! Ned Brainard, in Flux.

The Netizen wraps up its series on Rewiring Social Security this week -
but not before weighing the political feasibility of our panelists'
suggestions on the impending meltdown. Plus: John Heilemann, Jon Katz,
and the usual swarm of gadflies.

TeeVee kicks off Pop's new schedule with "Sneezin' Buddies," Harmon
Leon's contribution to small-screen culture. At week's end, Pop features
Future Sounds of London, with music and images created exclusively for
HotWired. In between, Pop reviews an album mixing schizophrenia with
cheesy keyboard riffs, another flick about killer lesbians (but with a
difference!), and more.

Our thanks to all those who propelled us into round two: HotWired has
won the title "Still Cool Site" in the 1996 Cool Site of the Year
Awards.

This Week's Guests in Club Wired:

Jim McKay's naturalistic drama "Girls Town" stands in stark contrast to
the sanitized style of Hollywood films like "Clueless" and the overt
didacticism of made-for-TV "issue" movies. Its realistic story line and
natural performances earned McKay the Filmmakers' Trophy at Sundance
last winter. He'll join us in Pop Talk on Tuesday to discuss his
successful foray into drama after his years making documentaries.

Join us in bidding farewell to founding host Jonathan Lethem this
Tuesday in Head Space. We'll reminisce about the old days and hear about
his new story collection, "The Wall of the Sky, the Wall of the Eye"
(Harcourt Brace, 1996).

Digital IDs are being billed as the key to making the Web safe for
commerce - the bridge to profitability for online businesses. But Simson
Garfinkel warns that even digital IDs don't guarantee security. Join him
to discuss the current state of cryptography, Wednesday in PacketChat.

Experimental art has found a home on the Web. While GIF animations can
be clunky and slow, some Web artists have worked within the technology's
limitations to give us a taste of future possibilities. Chat with Andrew
Leonard Thursday in PacketChat about how far art on the Web has (or
hasn't) come.

Jim Thomas is co-editor of Cu Digest, a professor of sociology and
criminal justice, and a research methodologist, as well as maintaining
the ASC's Critical Criminology homepage. Jim joins host Jon Lebkowsky in
Electronic Frontiers forum on Thursday to discuss his forthcoming book
on prison culture.

Check the Club Wired schedule for detailed descriptions of these and
other events.

Forget Your Password?
+--+--+--+--+--+--+--+

We know, we know. You have 18 slightly different usernames and
passwords, and you just can't keep track. Don't let an eight-digit
password keep you from posting to Threads, chatting, tuning up your
browser, or changing your preferences. If you've forgotten yours, all
you have to do is reply to this message, change the subject line to read
PASSWORD (that's important), and include a one-sentence note with your
name, email address, and membername (if you remember it).

Or you can call our toll-free support services number: (888) 276 8777.
Please have your email address ready.
