Hello and welcome to HotFlash, the weekly newsletter of events and
information for HotWired and WIRED magazine.

She'll Forgive You Eventually
+--+--+--+--+--+--+--+--+--+--+

"No, Mom, I didn't hang up on you - the Internet crashed the long-
distance phone network." Could this happen? Yes, says Simson Garfinkel -
and the telcos want us to pay for fixing it. Check out Garfinkel on
technology, Michael Schrage on markets, Andrew Leonard on culture, and
John McChesney's HotSeat, in Packet - made possible by Oldsmobile.

Rocker dude! Your band rocks, you have a homepage - what are you waiting
for? Find out how to put your sounds on the Web - and get a survey of
current audio formats - in Webmonkey, a service station for the wired
world. Plus: DeBabelizer, the new IE 3.0 beta, and why the Pixound
plug-in rules.

Crystal meth can take us from tired to wired and back again in the blink
of a glazed eye - but the side effects don't stop with weight loss. Dr.
Weil charts the ups and downs of methamphetamine, and more.

What's in a name? If the name is Pentium, PowerBook, or Zima, the answer
is: A lot of money. We've found an open job at Lexicon Naming, with
its Fortune 500 client base and its spot by the bay. Plus: Jobs at Sub
Pop, JavaSoft, Corbis, and WhoWhere? In Dream Jobs, made possible by
Dockers Khakis (tm).

The Stinger is like a gust of mint wrapped in the smoothness of good
brandy. It could be your late-night ace in the hole. In Cocktail.

Ned Brainard hears heavy breathing at Electric Minds. In Flux.

Where can the critique of transnational corporate power and the
celebration of "polymorphous perversity" meet, shake hands, and have it
out? R. U. Sirius and Mark Dery debate cyberdelia in this week's Brain
Tennis.

On to other newsworthy debates: The presidential showdown this week
could be high drama, low comedy, slapstick, vaudeville, or all of the
above. Find out in The Netizen, with John Heilemann, Jon Katz, and the
usual bouquet of cynics.

Computers are people - at least that's how we're inclined to treat them.
This week Pop reads "The Media Equation," in which the guys behind
Microsoft Bob draw some practical conclusions that seem prankish,
manipulative, and on occasion pretty scary. You'll also get a drive-by
look at the fall TV season, a less-than-genuine blues man, films from
Mike Leigh and Barry Levinson, and music, words, and images from FSOL.

This Week's Guests in Club Wired:

In Head Space: Following a number of penetrating SF/fantasy short
stories, Karen Joy Fowler's first novel, "Sarah Canary" (Holt, 1991),
received acclaim inside and outside the field. Fowler joins host Martha
Soukup on Tuesday to discuss her new novel, "The Sweetheart Season"
(Holt, 1996), pie recipes, and hitting into the gap.

Wednesday in WiredSide Chat: Join our running chat during the
presidential debate, where we'll comment on all of the blunders, the
bravura, and the sheer boredom of it all. Hear the debate in RealAudio
and join The Netizen staff and our Club Wired audience in simultaneous
chat.

Then, after Round Two of the debates on Wednesday, The Netizen's John
Heilemann and David Wright of KQED will swap questions, comments, and
analysis about the candidates' performances with the Club Wired
audience, again in WiredSide Chat.

Join Andrew Leonard and host Brooke Shelby Biggs on Thursday in
PacketChat to mourn the gradual demise of coolness on the Web - marked
most recently by the death of the celebrated lyrics server.

Later on Thursday, in Electronic Frontiers, "NetLaw" author and online
legal counsel Lance Rose will join host Jon Lebkowsky for an informed
discussion on cyberlaw.

On Friday, hypertext pioneer and electronic publishing guru Ted Nelson
will speak at the San Francisco State University's fall Multimedia
Pioneers lecture series, "HyperShifts to Paradigm Links," on the new
artistic language created by technology. Join us for a RealAudio
broadcast of his lecture and simultaneous chat where he'll take
questions from the audience, in Talk.com.

Check the Club Wired schedule for detailed descriptions of these and
other events.

Forget Your Password?
+--+--+--+--+--+--+--+

We know, we know. You have 18 slightly different usernames and
passwords, and you just can't keep track. Don't let an eight-digit
password keep you from posting to Threads, chatting, tuning up your
browser, or changing your preferences. If you've forgotten yours, all
you have to do is reply to this message, change the subject line to read
PASSWORD (that's important), and include a one-sentence note with your
name, email address, and membername (if you remember it).

Or you can call our toll-free support services number: (888) 276 8777.
Please have your email address ready.

This week's HotFlash is brought to you by Bravada - from Oldsmobile:

It's no coincidence that BRAVADA is the well-mannered sport utility
vehicle that civilizes the road. BRAVADA has something that makes the
varied climate and terrain of the U.S. easier to handle, it's called
SmartTrak. SmartTrak is a full-time all-wheel-drive system that
automatically works to help you maintain sure-footed traction and
control. With SmartTrak, you don't have to pull any levers or push
buttons to activate it. It's there the moment you need it.
