HotFlash 3.45
for the week of 18 October 1996
=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=
Hello and welcome to HotFlash, the weekly newsletter of events and
information for HotWired and WIRED magazine.
What Killed the Cat
+--+--+--+--+--+--+--+
We prefer to look on the bright side, so we'll assume curiosity made you
ask Dr. Weil about cyanide poisoning. If not, your 15 minutes is almost
up. This week the doc responds to queries about poison, hiccups, flu
shots, and other matters of life and death. And for those moments when
your question just can't wait, call on the Doc Weil Database.

Simson Garfinkel ponders other weapons of destruction in Packet this
week. This time it's "SYN flooding" that's threatening to do in your Web
server. To catch the attacking hackers, Simson says, we'd need to
eliminate anonymity from the TCP/IP protocol. Check out Garfinkel on
technology, Michael Schrage on markets, Andrew Leonard on culture, and
John McChesney's HotSeat, in Packet - made possible by Oldsmobile.

The unknown does have its charms. This week, Cocktail unveils a classic
concoction, combining vodka, cointreau, chartreuse, and anonymity: The
Drink Without a Name.

Then again, sometimes it's vital to know who's who. Marimba needs an
engineer who lives and breathes authentication and encryption: "If
you know enough to be dangerous, we want you." We've also found open
jobs at Avatar Ontology, IFT, co2 Media, and more. In Dream Jobs, made
possible by Dockers Khakis (tm).

There are probably things you can't do with cascading stylesheets - for
example, our kitchen could stand a coat of paint - but there's a whole
lot you CAN do, too. At week's end, Webmonkey's new Demo will show you
some tricks of the webmasters's trade - and, earlier in the week, a
plug-in using vector-based graphics, an image-map conversion script, and
more. In Webmonkey, a service station for the wired world.

On Thursday, the Rough Surf commemorates those who have left this world
(and those who won't leave) with a Day of the Dead travelogue - and a
survey of the world's most famous cemeteries.

Esther Dyson gave an auction, but nobody came. Ned Brainard, in Flux.

Memes, says Aaron Lynch, are ideas that spread like viruses, programming
their own retransmission. Richard Barbrook counters that memetics are
"dud philosophy, bad science, and reactionary politics." Is "thought
contagion" just cyberbollocks? Find out in this week's Brain Tennis.

Viruses mean epidemics - and thoughts of pestilence remind us that
election day is almost here. On Monday, Ross Perot's running mate, Pat
Choate, will be our guest in WiredSide Chat. And treat yourself to the
usual blend of sharp tongues and sharper wits in The Netizen this week.

"Swingers," in the words of Mike Tanner, is "the new martini-invasion
vehicle" - not just a movie about cocktail culture, but a joke on the
fashion machine and its willing victims. Pop also looks at wit in
graphic design, hears new releases from Joni Mitchell, follows a curious
artist who walks on water, and surfs the polluted wave of
post-prime-time TV.

This Week's Guests in Talk.com:
Dr. Barry Sears, best-selling author of "The Zone: A Dietary Road Map"
(HarperCollins, 1995), will be taking questions in Talk.com on Monday
morning.
Later on Monday, join former Washington economist and Reform Party vice
presidential candidate Pat Choate in WiredSide Chat for a live
discussion about politics, his party, and the man who would be
president, Ross Perot.
On Tuesday, "Stuttering" John Melendez from the Howard Stern show will
baptize the bandwidth with his spittle in Talk.com.
In Head Space: SF/fantasy author Sean Stewart's seasons of hardship
living among "survivors" during bitter winters in Canada and blazing
summers in Texas may explain why such people also inhabit his epic
fantasies - as in his latest, "Clouds End" (Ace Books, 1996). Join
Stewart in Talk.com on Tuesday.
Leila Kenzle of "Mad About You" will answer questions about the hit
sitcom in Talk.com on Wednesday evening.
In Thursday's PacketChat, Web culture columnist Andrew Leonard discusses
the personal information forms we fill out on Web sites, and how they
may be doing more to degrade our privacy than the CDA ever could.
Lisa Kanning of "Entertainment Tonight" forecasts the blockbusters of
this holiday season in Talk.com on Thursday.
Later on Thursday, in Electronic Frontiers, Net historian and prominent
technojournalist Katie Hafner joins host Jon Lebkowsky to focus on
cyberpunks, cypherpunks, virtual communities, and the ongoing evolution
of the Net.
Find out what actress Teri Garr has been up to, Friday in Talk.com.
Check the Talk.com schedule for detailed descriptions of these and other
events.

Forget Your Password?
+--+--+--+--+--+--+--+
We know, we know. You have 18 slightly different usernames and
passwords, and you just can't keep track. Don't let an eight-digit
password keep you from posting to Threads, chatting, tuning up your
browser, or changing your preferences. If you've forgotten yours, all
you have to do is reply to this message, change the subject line to read
PASSWORD (that's important), and include a one-sentence note with your
name, email address, and membername (if you remember it).
Or you can call our toll-free support services number: (888) 276 8777.
Please have your email address ready.
