HotFlash 3.48
for the week of 8 November 1996

Hello and welcome to HotFlash, the weekly newsletter of events and
information for HotWired and WIRED magazine.

Not Merely a Test
+--+--+--+--+--+--+--+

Idle hands are the devil's workshop, our grandmother liked to remark,
and apparently her words hit home. The evidence? Test Patterns, where
HotWired members can enjoy the pet projects we create to keep sleep at
bay - including the Beta Lounge, MiniMind, and KHOT, a streaming-audio
jukebox starring HotWired's finest musicians.

Rupert Murdoch is hell-bent on doing news on the Net - and if you enjoy
a frenzied pace and a high profile, Fox News Internet is looking for a
design manager. We've also found open jobs at Sony Music Canada, NetCom,
Rhythm and Hues, and Hawaii Online. In Dream Jobs, made possible by
Dockers Khakis (tm).

On the Net, all actions - commerce included - are global, reminds
Michael Schrage. So why do so many corporate Web sites pretend that
English is the only language on the planet? Check out Schrage on
markets, Garfinkel on tech, Leonard on culture, and McChesney's HotSeat,
in this week's Packet - made possible by Oldsmobile.

You're human. You've traveled, dreamed, worked, loved. You think you
know what life on earth is like. Well, think again. This week in Pop,
John Alderman reviews "Deep Atlantic," an extraordinary book exploring
the world's largest ecosystem, a place where no humans need apply. Also
in Pop this week: Harmon TV's sex-change sitcom, Mike Tanner's take on
"Paradise Lost," Tom Friedman's artistic investigations, Mark Glaser on
a CD-ROM game with serious star power, and Rob Levine's remarks on
"Hype!" - a documentary that shreds the media's recent obsession with
the Seattle grunge scene.

Microsoft's Internet Explorer 3.0 has moved to the Mac, in a beta with
features that echo the Windows 95 version - and with support for ActiveX
and Java, kinda sorta. Look into the new IE browser, the Adobe Acrobat
plug-in, Web fonts, and linking with FTP - in Webmonkey, a service
station for the wired world.

Ned Brainard endures a wankfest for Tinseltown cyberwannabes. In
Monday's Flux.

The Netizen plays hob with your assumptions again this week, flipping
received wisdom on its head and shaking the change out of its pockets.
Get the skinny on the fat cats this week from John Heilemann, Jon Katz,
and guest columnists too notorious to name.

With the jackass-and-dumbo show behind us, we drink to nobler days.
Cocktail inaugurates El Presidente - mixing rum, vermouth, and curacao.

You've got no friends, no job, no romance, and your dog winces when you
lean in for a smooch. Is it your breath? Did you ever doubt it? Go
scrape your tongue, suggests Dr. Weil, as he surveys possible causes and
cures. Also this week: answers on color blindness, laughing gas, yam
cream, and food additives. And for a rapid response, dip into the Doc
Weil Database.

Is nanotechnology a promise, a threat, or a hubristic delusion? Brad Cox
and Ed Regis wrap up their debate this week, in Brain Tennis.

This week's guests in Talk.com:

On Tuesday, join Neil Gaiman, English semi-expatriate and writer of the
DC Vertigo comic "Sandman," to chat about recent projects, including his
most recent novel (and BBC miniseries) "Neverwhere" (BBC Books). In Head
Space.

Andrew Leonard says the Net has made us all jerks. On Thursday, come
discuss whether it isn't just a little too easy to hit that Send button,
flaming, spamming, and otherwise wasting bandwidth, time, and energy. In
PacketChat.

Also on Thursday, Trance Mission brings the powerful, almost narcotic
blend of Kent's didgeridoo, Newby's samples, and the odd jazz grooves of
Custer's clarinet to the HotWired studios for a live set. Join Kim
Danders for an audio chat with Trance Mission's members before they
play. In PopTalk.

Later on Thursday, NetAction founder Audrie Krause talks about bringing
existing grass-roots organizations and online activists together to
discuss such political issues as electronic privacy and free speech on
the Net. Join host Jon Lebkowsky for an hour of down-home, online
do-gooding. In Electronic Frontiers.

On Friday: The US military dreams of wars fought by bio-engineered
soldiers, using the weapons of nanotechnology - with the whole mess
getting cleaned up by microbes in the end. Author Ed Regis went to the
Army War College biotechnology workshop to get the real story, wrote
about it in WIRED 4.11, and chats about it in Wired Arena.

Check out Talk.com to get detailed descriptions of these and
other events.

Forget Your Password?
+--+--+--+--+--+--+--+

We know, we know. You have 18 slightly different usernames and
passwords, and you just can't keep track. Don't let an eight-digit
password keep you from posting to Threads, chatting, tuning up your
browser, or changing your preferences. If you've forgotten yours, all
you have to do is reply to this message, change the subject line to read
PASSWORD (that's important), and include a one-sentence note with your
name, email address, and membername (if you remember it).

Or you can call our toll-free support services number: (888) 276 8777.
Please have your email address ready.
