Hello and welcome to HotFlash, the weekly newsletter of events and
information for HotWired and WIRED magazine.

Breaking News, As It Happens
+--+--+--+--+--+--+--+--+--+--+

Each day, Wired News covers every dimension of the digital revolution -
business, politics, culture, and technology - telling you what's next in
the wired world and what it means for you. Always fresh, our original
reports hit what the mainstream press misses. Wired News is always on.
Come check it out.

There's been a recent addition to Netscape's site: "Plug-in Extras," to
"enhance the functionality" of your plug-ins. Luke Knowland - while
wondering why they don't just make the plug-ins functional to begin with
- strives to take an unjaundiced look at this brave new world. Plus:
dilemmas of cross-platform publishing, the truth about <meta>, and a
Celtic doodler, in Webmonkey, a service station for the wired world.

Speaking of enhancements: If you have a penis (don't laugh - they're
very common!) you may have worried that Willie's on the small side - not
that there's anything wrong with that. But before you resort to scalpels
or weights, Dr. Weil has a word to the wise: The odds are you're more or
less average. The doc also has answers this week on cold remedies,
healing with magnets, memory loss, and wheatgrass. And for a quick
response, query the Doc Weil Database.

The "Year of the Net" ends with a whimper, as financier fickleness
replaces spring's torrid deal-making. Ned Brainard, in Monday's Flux.

In these days of "push media," when pumping content at consumers is the
rage, does anyone care about interactivity - or are people just too damn
lazy? This week Andrew Leonard visits the incredible World Wide Glide
site, but remains skeptical about the creative urges of the masses.
Check out Leonard on culture, Biggs on media, Garfinkel on technology,
and McChesney's HotSeat, in Packet - made possible by Oldsmobile.

No, it's not a bartender's tribute to Boris Yeltsin - though that might
be appropriate. Cocktail presents the Cold War concoction that kicked
off the '50s vodka craze: The Moscow Mule.

"There's a politician under every stone," said Aristophanes - and guess
who's been throwing them? Sharp commentary and deadly trajectory join
forces, in The Netizen.

Office politics can be fierce, too, and sometimes it's a relief to get
away from your desk. Does India sound far enough? Cha needs someone to
oversee a photo shoot at a palace in Rajasthan - then create a digital
replica back in New York. We've also found open positions at C2Net, Back
Row Productions, Pangea Systems, and Glide Memorial Church. In Dream
Jobs, made possible by Dockers Khakis (tm).

They tag birds, whales, elephants, and sheep - so why not spam? James
Love and Scott Hazen Mueller debate whether government or technology
should resolve the junk email crisis, this week in Brain Tennis.

A friendly waiter, a big coat, and a risotto with oyster mushrooms and
mascarpone cheese: This week Fillet takes you to lunch at Rumpus. In
Test Patterns - also featuring KHOT, MiniMind, and the amazing Beta
Lounge.

This week's guests in Talk.com:

Allen Ginsberg, Monday in Pop Talk: This has been a prolific year for
poet Allen Ginsberg, with the releases of his "Selected Poems,"
"Illuminated Poems," and "The Ballad of the Skeletons," plus
accompanying videos and CDs. Join Allen and HotWired's Steve Silberman
as we discuss these and other works, the recent Beat culture revival,
and his following on the Web.

Also on Monday in Pop Talk: Growing up in the mecca of turntable art
that is Chicago, DJ Mark Farina learned how to mix with the best. In
addition to being one of the foremost house music DJs, he created his
own style: Mushroom Jazz. Join us as Mark rocks the Internet with a live
mix and chats about his new enhanced CD and mushrooms.

Tuesday in Wired Talk: In WIRED 4.12, author Neal Stephenson reports the
epic tale of the largest digital wire on Earth, stretching underwater
from England to Japan - a story full of modern sea monsters, brave nerd
engineers, and exotic lands. Join Stephenson and host Bob Parks to talk
fiber optics and nonfiction.

Tuesday in Head Space: Sci-fi author, authority, and gadfly Damon Knight
is known for sharp and skeptical fiction. Also a rigorous sci-fi critic,
Damon runs writers 50 years his junior ragged, and terrorizes the Net
with tough-writer advocacy. Join Damon and host Martha Soukup for a
session of sci-fi tough love.

Thursday's PacketChat: With the World Wide Glide project promising truly
cool musical interactivity on the Web, could the interactive multimedia
era finally be upon us? Join technoculture columnist Andrew Leonard to
chat about real creative interactivity and where it could take us.

Thursday, in Electronic Frontiers: Ed Schwartz, author of "NetActivism:
How Citizens Use the Internet," joins host Jon Lebkowsky as we discuss
online communities, political forums, and cyber mobilization.

Friday, Mark Vaz in Pop Talk: In his new book, "Industrial Light &
Magic: Into the Digital Realm," Vaz chronicles the past two decades of
groundbreaking visual effects in American filmmaking, brought to us by
ILM. Join us to talk special effects and glimpse ILM's next decade with
a special report on the newly remastered "Star Wars: A New Hope."

Forget Your Password?
+--+--+--+--+--+--+--+

We know, we know. You have 18 slightly different usernames and
passwords, and you just can't keep track. Don't let an eight-digit
password keep you from posting to Threads, chatting, tuning up your
browser, or changing your preferences. If you've forgotten yours, all
you have to do is reply to this message, change the subject line to read
PASSWORD (that's important), and include a one-sentence note with your
name, email address, and membername (if you remember it).

Or you can call our toll-free support services number: (888) 276 8777.
Please have your email address ready.

This week's HotFlash is brought to you by the Canon PowerShot 600
digital camera:

The most advanced digital camera in its class, the PowerShot 600
captures more detail, giving you better, truly realistic pictures. Just
point and shoot.

Plus you can crop, enlarge and manipulate those images with dramatic
results.

It's another great component of Canon's photo-realistic desktop
solutions.
