Hello and welcome to HotFlash, the weekly newsletter of events and
information for HotWired and WIRED magazine.
Time's Flux
+--+--+--+--+--+
We're the first to celebrate the passing of the old and the advent of
the new. So while others may toast the New Year with champagne, we'll
hoist a concoction as ephemeral and full of meaning as a kiss - the
Martini, in Cocktail.

Atlantic Records turns 50 this year, but its Web site - mainly devoted
to cybercasting for the likes of Tori Amos, the Lemonheads, and the
inevitable Hootie - has been around only 18 months. Now Atlantic's
multimedia division seeks a Web-savvy designer to help turn strategy
into reality. We've also found open positions at Superscape and Etak -
in Dream Jobs, made possible by Dockers Khakis (tm).

Good intentions notwithstanding, you've got to draw the line somewhere,
says HotWired's Jim Frew - but you've also got to be ready to see your
Web masterwork suck when viewed through, say, AOL's exemplary browser.
Jim lays out strategies to help your page design survive manhandling by
a broad array of browsers. In Webmonkey, a service station for the wired
world.

The best laid plans, continued: Dr. Weil offers antidotes for a flagging
sex drive - including, for men, the ayurvedic herb ashwaganda. The good
doctor also has answers this week on hangover cures, colloidal minerals,
and the great circumcision debate - or, to cut directly to the chase,
query the Doc Weil Database.

Planning seems to be the sole pursuit of Web editors during these
holiday weeks - planning to blow off their jobs, that is. Ned Brainard
surveys a wasteland of reruns, summations, and other "best of" filler,
in Monday's Flux.

Until now, deciding between the safety of the Java sandbox and the power
of ActiveX has been a Hobson's choice - but now, says Simson Garfinkel,
a new Java sandbox model could become a compelling reason to ditch IE
3.0. Check out Garfinkel on tech, Silberman on culture, and McChesney's
HotSeat in this week's Packet, made possible by Oldsmobile.

They say time heals all wounds, but the malady of politics engenders a
burning sensation that never seems to fade. This week The Netizen
provides soothing relief for past injuries, as we revisit the incisive
analyses and witty bedside banter of our 1996 campaign coverage.

As the global economy grows, the question remains: Who benefits from its
increase? David Korten argues that the world needs a localization of
economic structures, rooting capital to real places and real people,
while Steve Gibson views the world economy as an ecosystem, saying
economic policy should simply aim to cultivate its continued growth. The
debate begins in this week's Brain Tennis.

Speaking of productivity, we're pleased to see that those overworked
elves are finally getting a vacation. Some of us, on the other hand,
continue to labor obsessively long after office hours have ended. Enjoy
the result in Test Patterns - featuring KHOT, MiniMind, Fillet, and the
amazing Beta Lounge.

This week's guests in Talk.com:
Mike Godwin, Thursday in Electronic Frontiers: A leading proponent of
cyber rights and staff counsel for the EFF, Godwin is a widely respected
expert on such topics as free speech in online publishing and the
application of international law to computer communications. Join him
and host Jon Lebkowsky to chat about social and legal issues on the
electronic frontier and to consider such recent developments as the
Cybersitter case.
Mark Vaz, Friday in Pop Talk: In his new book, "Industrial Light &
Magic: Into the Digital Realm," Vaz chronicles the past two decades of
groundbreaking visual effects in American filmmaking, brought to us by
ILM. Join us to talk special effects and glimpse ILM's next decade with
a special report on the newly remastered "Star Wars: A New Hope."

Forget Your Password?
+--+--+--+--+--+--+--+
We know, we know. You have 18 slightly different usernames and
passwords, and you just can't keep track. Don't let an eight-digit
password keep you from posting to Threads, chatting, tuning up your
browser, or changing your preferences. If you've forgotten yours, all
you have to do is reply to this message, change the subject line to read
PASSWORD (that's important), and include a one-sentence note with your
name, email address, and membername (if you remember it).
Or you can call our toll-free support services number: (888) 276 8777.
Please have your email address ready.
