Hello and welcome to HotFlash, the weekly newsletter of events and
information for HotWired and WIRED magazine.
Adventures in the Brain Trade
+--+--+--+--+--+--+--+--+--+--+
Everything has its price - even that brainstorm brewing between your
ears - and ideaMarket's plan to be the Web's thoughtmart could rake in a
pretty penny. Here's a tip: they're in the market for an acquisitions
editor. We've also found open jobs at the Center for Democracy and
Technology, Wild Brain Studios, Oz Interactive, and Purple Moon. In
Dream Jobs, made possible by Dockers Khakis (tm).

Idle minds are the devil's playpen, but who plays in an idle CPU?
Mipsucking JavaScript applets, that's who. This Tuesday, Michael Schrage
reports on a technology that could turn a Web site into a massively
parallel meta-supercomputer by harnessing the unused cycles of visiting
machines. Check out Schrage on markets, Garfinkel on technology,
Frauenfelder on culture, and McChesney's HotSeat - in this week's
Packet, made possible by Oldsmobile.

It seems spiders can't index Web pages built on the fly. Why? Find out -
and get a prerelease glimpse of Netscape's latest browser - this week in
Webmonkey, a service station for the wired world.

Ned Brainard relates daring prognostications from the Pope of Puget
Sound. Among them: widespread use of email by year's end! Bill Gates'
pearls of wisdom, in Monday's Flux.

The health of the body politic comes under examination once again in
this week's Netizen, as our unflinching diagnosticians poke and provoke
the politicians and pundits who are making the rest of us sick. Losing
patience with the powers that be? See them dissected - sans anesthesia -
in The Netizen.

In cases of self-inflicted illness, this soothing drink doubles as a
post-party multivitamin. The Red Snapper, in Cocktail.

Which reminds us: Have you been eating your vegetables? All this week
Dr. Weil's talking vitamins - and not the kind that come in a highball
glass. The good doctor will have answers on B-12 boosters, folic acid,
multivitamins, antioxidants, and fast-acting herbs. And for a rapid
response, query the Doc Weil Database.

Inspired frenzy or unhealthy obsession? Either way, we can't seem to
quit. Check out the products of our passion - KHOT, MiniMind, Fillet,
and the remarkable Beta Lounge - in Test Patterns.

Each day, throughout the day, Wired News brings you original reports on
the business, technology, politics, and culture of the Digital
Revolution. It's what you need to know to stay on top of the wired
world. Come check it out.

Is the global economy an ecosystem best left to evolve without
constraint, or a corporate plutocracy in need of democratic reform?
David Korten and Steve Gibson continue their debate in this week's Brain
Tennis.

This week's guests in Talk.com:
Monday in Wired Talk: Record companies have begun to fight back against
the online trade in bootleg recordings, hiring companies like GrayZone
to spy on chatrooms and message boards. Writer Don Steinberg talks about
his experience reporting on GrayZone, and describes how new technologies
are making bootlegged music ever harder to curtail.
Tuesday in Wired Talk: When Frank Drake looks for space aliens, he's not
just trying to make the cover of "The Weekly World News." Drake is a
respected scientist and president of a research institute called SETI
(Search for Extraterrestrial Intelligence) that scans the skies for
signs of alien radio transmissions. Come chat with Drake about SETI's
mission and, if you're feeling expansive, tell us a bit about life on
your home planet.
Also on Tuesday: Gardner Dozois, winner of multiple Nebula and Hugo
awards and hailed as "the most imaginative editor in SF today," sits
down with host Martha Soukup in Head Space to discuss the hottest short
sci-fi of 1996.
Thursday in Wired Talk: Shortly after the year 2000, the Human Genome
Project will have transcribed the code underlying human life - which
will then be freely available to anyone who wants it. Talk with author
Charles Platt (who covered the project for WIRED) about the prospect of
companies tweaking genetic data to create and market customized pets,
infomorphs, and other novel life-forms.
Also on Thursday: Back in the day, Brock N. Meeks pioneered political
journalism on the Web with the CyberWire Dispatch. Now the former
WIRED/HotWired DC correspondent rakes muck from his new slot as MSNBC's
Washington bureau chief. Join us in Electronic Frontiers as Brock talks
Beltway trash with host John Lebkowsky.
Thursday in Pop Talk: Join us backstage at San Francisco's Club Ikon
Massive to chat with MixMaster Morris, whose drum-machine-free
electronic music has fueled two indie chart-toppers, "Flying High" and
"Global Chillage," and collaborations with the likes of Shamen,
Spiritualized, and Jesus Jones - then stick around for a live broadcast
of the MixMaster's set.

Forget Your Password?
+--+--+--+--+--+--+--+
We know, we know. You have 18 slightly different usernames and
passwords, and you just can't keep track. Don't let an eight-digit
password keep you from posting to Threads, chatting, tuning up your
browser, or changing your preferences. If you've forgotten yours, all
you have to do is reply to this message, change the subject line to read
PASSWORD (that's important), and include a one-sentence note with your
name, email address, and membername (if you remember it).
Or you can call our toll-free support services number: (888) 276 8777.
Please have your email address ready.
