Hello and welcome to HotFlash, the weekly newsletter of events and
information for HotWired and WIRED magazine.

Country Pleasures
+--+--+--+--+--+--+--+

Hidden in the placid Berkshires are some folks who love to blow things
up. Mass Illusion, a special-effects studio with a blockbuster list of
Hollywood clients, is a magnet for animators and technical wizards who
prefer country pleasures to Tinseltown hype. Now they'd like to draw in
a developer to revamp their production software. We've also found open
jobs at Miami New Times and at Echo - in this week's Dream Jobs, made
possible by Dockers Khakis (tm).

Paper prices are the last thing you'd expect online publishers to care
about, says Brooke Shelby Biggs - but media moguls do glance at the
bottom line occasionally, and with pulp costs plummeting, the leap from
newsprint to pixels is no longer a no-brainer. Get Biggs on media,
Garfinkel on technology, Silberman on culture, and McChesney's HotSeat -
in this week's Packet, made possible by Oldsmobile.

Faster is better in the online world, so when 56-Kbps modems are pitched
as ISDN for the rest of us, people's ears perk right up. But having
considered these claims (and the big bucks hanging in the balance), this
week's Geek Talk echoes Flavor Flav: Don't believe the hype. The truth
about 56-Kbps modems, HTML's future, and Web 101: Web Basics for
Smarties, this week in Webmonkey, a service station for the wired world.

IBM's PR hordes went into coverup mode when their scribe reported claims
that Big Blue had human help. Ned Brainard, in Monday's Flux.

Stevia's been used as a sweetener for centuries, from China to Brazil,
with no hint of ill effects - yet the FDA seems dead set against it.
Pressure from the aspartame lobby, perchance? Get the skinny on a
healthy alternative to sugar in Dr. Weil's Q&A this week - along with
answers on tuberculosis, chocolate, tai chi, and health problems men
shouldn't ignore. And for a quick reply, ask the Doc Weil Database.

People argue about drink recipes all the time, but in the case of the
Bacardi Cocktail, New York's high court had the last word. Discover how
justice is served, in Cocktail.

Last week Jon Katz discovered just how hot the Bill Gates button can be.
Now he's moving on to plumb a new genre, born at the crossroads of
technology and humanity: The technotragedy, in this week's Netizen.

day, throughout the day, Wired News delivers an illuminating perspective
on the digital world, with original reports on business, technology,
politics, and culture. Wired News is always on. Come check it out.

A risotto expert embarks on a voyage of self-discovery and returns with
a recipe or two. In Test Patterns' Fillet.

Peevish, perhaps, but never splenetic: This week Net Surf lifts a stein
to a drummer who's an organ short.

Forget Your Password?
+--+--+--+--+--+--+--+

We know, we know. You have 18 slightly different usernames and
passwords, and you just can't keep track. Don't let an eight-digit
password keep you from posting to Threads, chatting, tuning up your
browser, or changing your preferences. If you've forgotten yours, all
you have to do is reply to this message, change the subject line to read
PASSWORD (that's important), and include a one-sentence note with your
name, email address, and membername (if you remember it).

Or you can call our toll-free support services number: (888) 276 8777.
Please have your email address ready.
