HotFlash 4.29
for the week of 27 June 1997

Hello and welcome to HotFlash, HotWired's weekly newsletter of events
and information.
HotWired 4.0 - Time to Upgrade
=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=
On 1 July, HotWired flips the switch, adopting a new face, a new format,
and a new focus on the Web.
Why? In the last year, the Web has grown up. New technologies have
redefined what's possible, the online population has exploded, and the
medium evolves so fast even Web aficionados have trouble keeping up.
So we've reinvented HotWired with lovers of the Web in mind, creating a
unified site with a single purpose: offering information, innovation,
and inspiration to the people shaping the Web's future.
We've expanded and redesigned some existing sections - Webmonkey, Net
Surf, Dream Jobs, and the Beta Lounge - and added some new ones: RGB
Gallery, showcasing interactive digital art; Synapse, combining the best
of The Netizen, Packet, and Brain Tennis; and member homepages where
HotWired members can carve out a space of their own. We've taken our
design to a higher level, using new technologies to create a richer,
more immersive experience - the front door, for instance, is built in
dynamic HTML (a good excuse to upgrade to a 4.0 browser), and Jon Katz's
column (now in Synapse) uses frames to weave threaded discussion into
the mix.
Fear not - your other favorite haunts are alive and well, holding their
own as standalone sites. You'll find links to all of them - Wired News,
Cocktail, The Rough Guide, HotBot, NewBot, and the rest - on the Wired
Digital home page at http://home.wired.com.
If the Web's your turf, we built HotWired 4.0 for you. Check it out.

This week on HotWired:

Webmonkey: Build the Web
You dream of becoming the George Lucas of the Internet - zooms, pans,
special effects and all - but your budget's telling you to get real.
This Wednesday, Wendy Owen explains how to take your vision low-res with
WebCamToo, shareware that makes jerky, pixelated, thoroughly arty live
video for the Web. Plus: The low-down on XSSI, numerical server errors,
and more - in Webmonkey, a service station for the wired world.

Net Surf: Surf the Web
Red pencil in one hand, Suck co-founder Joey Anuff takes the reins of
Net Surf in the other, tracking the trends, misconceptions, and hype
that define the state of the Net. This week's mission: Divine the Web's
essence in five clicks or less.

Synapse: Think the Web
Jon Katz ushers in Synapse with a celebration of our mutual culture -
geekdom. Also: Steve Silberman's tale of the most despised URL on the
Net, Simson Garfinkel on the future of privacy, and James Fallows in the
HotSeat - in Synapse, made possible by Intrigue.

Dream Jobs: Work the Web
Would you shave your head to ship on schedule? Your new boss will - if
you're among Microsoft's incoming flock of multimedia engineers. We've
found open jobs in Redmond, at CyberStudios, and at ESPN/SportsZone - in
this week's Dream Jobs, made possible by Dockers Khakis (tm). And check
out our new feature - the Greener Grass List, an index of 100 companies
we'd love working for.

Beta Lounge: Hear the Web
The Beta Lounge celebrates the advent of HotWired 4.0 on Tuesday with a
live, star-studded netcast from our launch gala, featuring Detroit
Techno Godfather Stacey Pullen, DJ Disciple, and more. On Thursday, the
Beta Lounge DJs welcome New York's own DJ Seoul. Submit your medulla to
the rhythm - these sounds will force your brain to evolve.

RGB Gallery: Clear Your Cache
Shatter your preconceptions of what art on the Web can be: For its debut
exhibit, RGB - a digital gallery featuring works created exclusively for
HotWired - is pleased to present antirom. This British collective's
interactive Shockwave "engines" let you do the driving. Pray they don't
cancel your insurance.

In Talk.com
Sci-fi/fantasy author James Patrick Kelly won the Hugo award last year
for the title story in his book "Think Like a Dinosaur and Other
Stories." On Tuesday, join Kelly and host Martha Soukup to discuss his
writings in Head Space, Talk.com's weekly science-fiction chat.

Forget Your Password?
+--+--+--+--+--+--+--+
We know, we know. You have 18 slightly different usernames and
passwords, and you just can't keep track. Don't let an eight-digit
password keep you from posting to Threads, chatting, tuning up your
browser, or changing your preferences. If you've forgotten yours, all
you have to do is reply to this message, change the subject line to read
PASSWORD (that's important), and include a one-sentence note with your
name, email address, and membername (if you remember it).
Or you can call our toll-free support services number: (888) 276 8777.
Please have your email address ready.
