HotFlash 4.37 for the week of 24 August 1997

Hello and welcome to HotFlash, HotWired's weekly newsletter of events
and information.
Your Eyeball, Please

Synapse: Think the Web
Will your next email software do a retinal scan instead of asking for a
password? Will your next house refuse your key but instead scan your
fingerprint before letting you in? A discussion of how biometrics may
help us protect our privacy, Wednesday in HotSeat with host John
McChesney, CEO of IriScan John Siedlarz, and CEO of Identix Randall
Fowler.
Also, in Brain Tennis, cyber-attorney David Post and law professor Jack
Goldsmith debate whether geographical regions - such as states or
nations - can apply their terrestrial laws to activities on the Net. And
Friday, Brooke Shelby Biggs on how two recent news stories exposed how
government and big business may directly affect what you *don't* hear on
the evening news or read in your local newspaper.

Beta Lounge: Hear the Web
Local boy makes good: Gavin Hardkiss spins a mega set in preparation for
the Superlove Netcast direct from NYC. Also the inaugural co-production
with Sigma 6 featuring material from Derrick May's August 23rd set at
The Motor Lounge in Detroit.
Coming soon: International network party mania with Radio TNC in Linz,
Austria (11 September).

Webmonkey: Build the Web
This week in Tools, Jeff Veen sizes up the latest Microsoft browser's
ability to apply neat-o image filters to simple graphics and raw text.
It gets him thinking about a future where standards are written for HTML
but developers are free to invent cool apps that sit on top of browsers.
In Source: Compressing video small enough to shoot over the Web or to
fit on CD-ROMs is no small task. T. Jay Fowler sheds light on the whole
video compression/decompression process and outlines methods for
squeezing your footage.

Web 101: Learn the Web
Web 101, aka son of Webmonkey, grows up into its own section this week.
To kick it off, our own Eric Coull quizzes you on who's who in the Web industry. And
fresh on Friday: If you've never put images up on the Web, the process
of getting drawings and photographs into your computer and out to
cyberspace can be a mystifying one. Adam Powell demystifies.

Dream Jobs: Work the Web
David Glickman approves of campaigns like NetDay to get schools
connected, but lately he's been asking the follow-up question: How the
heck will they use it? Sure there are some gee-whiz sites for kids to
learn science out on the Web. But, says David, there aren't ways for
non-techie teachers to mainline the Net's power into their everyday
curriculum. That's why he's started Chalk, a nonprofit that's bringing
some real Web content into the schools. David is hiring a producer. Also
in Dream Jobs, GameWorks, that partnership between Sega, Steven
Speilberg's DreamWorks SKG, and Universal Studios, is hiring designers
to help develop the interiors of entertainment centers (don't call them
arcades) all over the country.
Dream Jobs is made possible by Dockers(R) Khakis.

Net Surf: Surf the Web
Joey Anuff returns to his rat theme, this time with the commandos of
e-commerce. With the snowball effect taking over online promotions,
soon you won't be able to do a search on anything without being
harassed with the book, the CD, the game, and the T-shirt, all
conveniently for sale only a click away. Will surfers be opening their
wallets or closing their browsers?

Live Chat in Talk.com
Tuesday, in Head Space: Greg Bear joins us to chat about his latest
novel, "/ Slant," a sequel to his 1994 "Queen of Angels." Set in
prosperous America in the year 2050 AD, the story spreads from
futuristic LA to Idaho and beyond. Bear's previous books include the
acclaimed "Blood Music," "Eon," and "Moving Mars."

RGB Gallery: Clear Your Cache
Prepare to be mesmerized. RGB Gallery continues with our second exhibit:
the work of Austrian artist Erwin Redl. With a distinct retro-techno
esthetic, Redl's project - "you me and; A Digital Minimal Opera in Three
Acts" - is a hypnotic visual-acoustic experience not to be missed.
Headphones recommended.

The Cuba Libre hails from the Old School of American Bartending, though
you certainly wouldn't guess it from the drink's vapid formula -
contrived out of convenience not competence. The Cuba Libre is rarely
our first choice at the bar. However, it's a highball that we've all
sipped and will surely sip again, so it's well worth setting the record
straight: A Cuba Libre is not a rum and Coke.

Forget Your Password?
=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=
We know, we know. You have 18 slightly different usernames and
passwords, and you just can't keep track. Don't let an eight-digit
password keep you from posting to Threads, chatting, tuning up your
browser, or changing your preferences. If you've forgotten yours, all
you have to do is reply to this message, change the subject line to read
PASSWORD (that's important), and include a one-sentence note with your
name, email address, and membername (if you remember it).
Or you can call our toll-free support services number: (888) 276 8777.
Please have your email address ready.
