HotFlash 4.40 for the week of 14 September 1997

Hello and welcome to HotFlash, HotWired's weekly newsletter of events
and information.

No minotaur here

RGB Gallery: Clear Your Cache

Presenting our third installation: David Opp's 4YB-200, a
labyrinthine meditation on the computer interface. There's no minotaur
here, but weave your way through Opp's maze of frames, scrolling pages,
Macintosh icons, and JavaScript alerts, and you just might find a secret
message.

Synapse: Think the Web

Should humans go the way of Dolly? This week in Brain Tennis,
biophysicist Gregory Stock and bioethicist Glen McGee discuss whether
genetic engineering of humans should be allowed, and who - if anyone -
should be on the watch. Can a free market in biotechnology be
self-policing, or should the government have strict regulatory powers?

Also, Congress will likely pass the Internet Tax Freedom Act next month
to boost e-commerce. States, however, want the freedom to govern - and
tax - the online companies within their borders. Jeffrey Obser says
there's a war in the works. Friday, in Synapse.

Net Surf: Surf the Web

This week, Joey Anuff examines how the cherished truisms of customer
service ("A satisfied customer tells a friend; a dissatisfied customer
tells 10" and "Win over a pissed-off customer and they're yours for
life") play out on the Web, spiritual home of the disgruntled.

Dream Jobs: Work the Web

Imagine a world without Sesame Street - no Big Bird, no Count, no Oscar
the Grouch. It's a horrible, terrible, awful thought ... Have no fear.
The Children's Television Workshop hopes to do for the Web what it did
for TV in the late '60s. And it just might be your ticket back to Sesame
Street. Thursday in Dream Jobs.

Beta Lounge: Hear the Web

Close that word processor and quit your boring spreadsheet ... catch the
Beta Lounge liiiive from HotWired's studios. The Network Syndicate
welcomes super-secret special surprise guest DJs from near and far to
freak the funk worldwide.

Webmonkey: Build the Web

Do you think the Web is too hard to use? That "Net-savvy" corporations
give terrible Web-based feedback? That design forgets the user? Mark
Hurst founded Creative Good to rail against these very problems, and
Jeffrey Veen interviews him, Monday in Tools.

Also, the Unix text editor vi could be your ticket to anywhere, anytime
Web-site editing and maintenance (especially when you have to use an
unfamiliar computer). Lisa Schmeiser gives you vi basics, Tuesday in
Source.

Web 101:

Do you know who moves the Web? Daryl Lindsey delves into his list of the
top-10 Net-movers and shares it with you, gentle reader. Friday, in Web
101.

Live chat in Talk.com

Tuesday in Head Space: It's been said that Greg Bear's latest novel, "/
Slant," is his most ambitious work yet, though his previous books,
including the acclaimed "Blood Music," "Eon," and "Moving Mars," are
hardly limited in scope. Join us as we chat with Greg about matters
biological, cosmogonical, and typographical.

Forget Your Password?
=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=

We know, we know. You have 18 slightly different user names and
passwords, and you just can't keep track. Don't let an eight-digit
password keep you from posting to Threads, chatting, tuning up your
browser, or changing your preferences. If you've forgotten yours, all
you have to do is reply to this message, change the subject line to read
PASSWORD (that's important), and include a one-sentence note with your
name, email address, and membername (if you remember it).

Or you can call our toll-free support services number: (888) 276 8777.
Please have your email address ready.
