Hello and welcome to HotFlash, HotWired's weekly newsletter of events
and information.
Stories about?

RGB Gallery: Clear Your Cache
RGB gallery is pleased to present its next exhibit, "49,682,923
stories about." This eerie mechanical museum is uniquely generated
each time you visit it. Inspired by the Italian commedia dell'arte and
created by precocious digital art duo signal2noise, the exhibit pushes
users to think about the stories we tell in our heads when we're
looking at pictures.

Webmonkey: Build the Web
While Sun and Microsoft tussle over Java in court, Jeffrey Veen takes
a step back and looks again at the programming language that was once
touted as the be-all, end-all Web phenomenon. Monday, in Tools.
Tuesday in Source, if you're new to JavaScript, Wendy Owen shows you
how to make a simple animated flipbook as you learn about creating
and working with arrays.

Web 101: C'mon, kids!
There's a whole wide world of good children's sites to
explore. A surf tour. Friday, in Web 101.

Net Surf: Surf the Web
Music pirates won't be able to sail the World Wide Web much longer if
BMI has its say. Joey Anuff reports on MusicBot, the company's
SWAT-style code designed to nab indignant tune merchants.

Synapse: Think the Web
On Monday, David Shenk trudges through the media ethics quagmire of
digitally altered photos. And Wednesday in HotSeat, host John
McChesney asks, Should librarians provide access to information, or do
doubletime as babysitters to keep "inappropriate" material from minors?
And Friday, Brooke Shelby Biggs reexamines objectivity - are
journalists obligated to weigh all issues equally, or can they make
some value judgments based on community standards? Biggs looks to the
Unabomber and the bestseller, "The Bible Code," for clues.

Beta Lounge: Hear the Web
Guest DJ Andre Lucero (Spacechildren) spins his first set at the new
Network Syndicate Worldwide Headquarters. Check the ill,
plug-in-free, XXL live video window for clues to our top secret
location and win a soon-to-be collectible certificate of achievement
personally signed by the entire Beta crew. What could be better?

Dream Jobs: Work the Web
Tuesday, Dream Jobs gives a heads-up on the Web Development Fund's
dilemma. The Greenwich Village project has three years' worth of
substantial grants to give out to creative Web site developers. But
they need an intern or two to help out with the arduous task.
Then on Thursday, San Francisco's quirky, out-of-this-world science
museum, the Exploratorium, wants to build a multimedia exhibit to fit
its personality, but first they need a multimedia specialist to help
them out.

Member Pages: Meet our Geek of the Week, Cindy Kurneck.
Cindy calls Pittsburgh, PA home, where she toils as a sysadmin by
day, and is haunted with dreams of Han Solo by night. But when
she's not surfing Han sites on the Web, she's longing for the day
when she can have a serial port installed in the back of her head.

Cocktail: The Hennesey Daiquiri
Christened after an annoying patron who just wanted to be noticed
while at a drinking establishment that shall remain nameless, this
libation was concocted by our Alchemist a few years back to quell
loudmouthed directives from this fellow, a psychologist who much
preferred practicing at the bar.

Forget Your Password?
=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=
We know, we know. You have 18 slightly different usernames and
passwords, and you just can't keep track. Don't let an eight-digit
password keep you from posting to Threads, chatting, tuning up your
browser, or changing your preferences. If you've forgotten yours, all
you have to do is reply to this message, change the subject line to
read PASSWORD (that's important), and include a one-sentence note with
your name, email address, and membername (if you remember it).
Or you can call our toll-free support services number: (888) 276 8777.
Please have your email address ready.
