Hello and welcome to HotFlash, HotWired's weekly newsletter of events
and information.
Hacking the Bible
=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=
Synapse: Think the Web
On Wednesday, join host John McChesney for a hot, hot, Hotseat. Michael
Drosnin, author of "The Bible Code" says Israeli mathematicians using
powerful computers have found an ancient code encrypted in the Old
Testament that predicts the future. Australian mathematician Brendan
McKay says it's a sham. "Anyone can program a computer to make
coincidences appear to be meaningful," he says. Tune in as they face
off.
And Friday, research scientist and Synapse newbie Bruce Krulwich
analyzes ecommerce's key flaw: thinking what works in the US will also
work in Trinidad, Uzbekistan, or Namibia.

Net Surf: Surf the Web
What do campaign finance reform and antitrust noncompliance have in
common? Joey Anuff looks at the latest scandals facing the bicoastal
bills.

Webmonkey: Build the Web
Monday, in Tools: In this ever-changing Internet world, Web
technologies (and their respective acronyms) spring up like mushrooms
after heavy rains. Jeff Veen defines the important new ones, from OSD
to XML.
Tuesday in Source, Taylor gives an advanced primer on JavaScript
arrays, detailing the automatic JavaScript excuse generator that he
turns to every time his editor hollers, "I want that article, young
man."

Web 101
Coming Friday, there's more to email than you might think. Email maven
JoAnne Allen gives the lowdown on mailing lists, email etiquette,
jargon, and little smiley faces :-). In Web 101.

Member Pages
With her five domains, Texas-sized attitude, and impeccable use of the
term "irony," Lorelei Brown is a geek after our hearts. Stereotype
this self-anointed Web Diva at your own risk. When she's not
architecting Web sites, you might find her knitting afghans; raising
giant, monster hostas; or shredding muscle - in preparation for her
first powerlifting competition.

RGB Gallery: Clear Your Cache
RGB gallery continues with "49,682,923 stories about." This eerie
mechanical museum is uniquely generated each time you visit it.
Inspired by the Italian Commedia dell'arte and created by signal2noise,
the exhibit pushes users to think about the stories we tell in our
heads when we see a series of images.

Beta Lounge: Hear the Web
The Bangin' Beta features proper techno this week with guests Marcus
Miller and Kit Clayton. They'll be spinning tracks from their label
Cytrax and discussing the inner workings and undercover actions of the
One Track Mind crew.

Dream Jobs: Work the Web
Tuesday, the Brooklyn Public Library is networking the real world with
the digital world. They're looking for a project coordinator to
organize this linkup between the library, Brooklyn Children's Museum,
Brooklyn Museum of Art, and local schools.
On Thursday, look in the closet at your Internet-equipped workplace
and you'll probably find network hardware made by giants like Cisco
Systems, Bay Networks, or 3Com. No matter which company built it, it
was tested with software from a spunky little company in Waltham,
Massachusetts, called Midnight Networks. The Midnight team is in need
of a good manager who can handle up to 20 people working on projects
for several vendors who may be in competition with each other. Got
what it takes?

Cocktail
What could be better around Halloween but a Satan's Whiskers?
Forgotten since the late '30s, a Satan's Whiskers soothes the savage
at twilight. A rich digestif with a distracting taste whose
ingredients are always enjoyed but rarely identified, this cocktail
reminds imbibers that not all behavior is becoming. Author Joseph
Lanza, in "The Cocktail" went as far to claim the cocktail hour as "a
ceremonial disunion of man from beast." We don't quite buy that, but
when we sip this drink, we certainly like the idea.

Forget Your Password? =-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=
We know, we know. You have 18 slightly different usernames and
passwords, and you just can't keep track. Don't let an eight-digit
password keep you from posting to Threads, chatting, tuning up your
browser, or changing your preferences. If you've forgotten yours, all
you have to do is reply to this message, change the subject line to
read PASSWORD (that's important), and include a one-sentence note with
your name, email address, and membername (if you remember it).
Or you can call our toll-free support services number: (888) 276 8777.
Please have your email address ready.
