THE SKY'S THE LIMIT

GRAPHIC SUPPORT

The following three diagrams illustrate the use of graphic techniques to analyze sounder measurements, sounding products, and weather.

The first diagram shows a color graphic display of radiometric measurements from MSU channel 2, which has peak sensitivity in the lower troposphere. The color scale is shown below, with blue to red indicating cold to warm, respectively. The horizontal coverage illustrates the typical range of a direct readout system.

MSU Channel 2

The second diagram shows the derived 850 mb temperature sounding data corresponding to the MSU-2 measurements. Notice the overall agreement between the thermal patterns illustrated by the radiometric measurements and derived temperature sounding data.

850 MB Temperature

The third diagram illustrates collocated radiosonde and soundings observations for temperature. Similar to the radiosonde, the derived satellite soundings provides temperature information throughoutthe atmosphere and troposphere. However, satellite soundings are notconfined to "single" locations, but provide coverage over extensive atmospheric volumes.
